Familiar Faces

Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Familiar Faces, featuring portraits by Charles Cooper, Phyllis Laver, Gilbert Lewis, Ryan Muldowney & Mickayel Thurin.  Engagement with another human through a portrait can be a riveting experience, offering the opportunity for a shared humanity.  Charles Cooper’s drawings and paintings present his private universe through a combination of observation, memory, and dreams.  Working directly form the model in graphite, Phyllis Laver’s figures engage the viewer directly or are captured seemingly unawares in contemplative moments.    Gilbert Lewis’ exquisitely rendered paintings of young men are based on observation, but are subtly mannered, featuring saturated color, linear elegance, pattern and precision.  Ryan Muldowney’s mixed media images of family members combine naturalism with startling graphic elements that disrupt straightforward representation.  Mickayel Thurin focuses on the painting process in her portraits of family and friends – color, shape, line – rather than their personality, which reveals itself organically.
